The rules that trip people up
- Revenue stamp (₹1): required only when rent is paid in cash and a single receipt exceeds ₹5,000, under the Indian Stamp Act(opens in new tab). The landlord must sign across the stamp. Paid by cheque/UPI/bank transfer? No stamp needed.
- Landlord PAN: mandatory when annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000 (i.e. ~₹8,334/month). No PAN? The landlord must provide a signed declaration (Form 60).
